Judging Criteria

Submissions will be marked out of 10 for each of the following criteria:

  • Quality of Design (10 points):
    Evidence of exceptional design aligned with educational goals, showcasing innovation, creativity, and user-centred solutions. Designs should demonstrate adaptability to the evolving needs of educational institutions.
  • Value Delivery (10 points):
    Demonstration of how the design provided measurable value, including cost-effectiveness, long-term operational efficiency, and adaptability to future needs. Include quantitative data or outcomes where possible.
  • Client Engagement and Satisfaction (10 points):
    Examples of client collaboration, responsiveness to feedback, and testimonials from key stakeholders, such as headteachers, facilities managers, or school governors.
  • Impact on Stakeholders (10 points):
    Evidence of the project’s positive impact on students, staff, and the wider community, focusing on how the design has enhanced educational outcomes and environments.
  • Sustainability and Innovation (10 points):
    Commitment to eco-friendly practices, sustainable materials, and innovative approaches to design challenges. Include specific metrics on carbon savings, energy efficiency, or other sustainability outcomes.

Entrants must provide the following:

  • A written summary (max 1,000 words) addressing the judging criteria.
  • Case studies of up to 3 projects, including visuals (photos, renderings, or drawings).
  • At least one client testimonial, ideally from a senior stakeholder.

    Evidence of the client’s clear vision, ambition, and dedication to delivering an outstanding learning environment, demonstrating a strong commitment to excellence.
  • Collaboration and Leadership (10 points)
    Examples of how the client has driven a collaborative approach, engaging with design teams, contractors, and key stakeholders to bring their vision to life.
  • Innovation and Creativity (10 points)
    Demonstration of how the client has championed innovation—whether in design, technology, or project delivery—to push boundaries and create inspiring, future-proofed spaces.
  • Impact on Users and Community (10 points)
    Evidence of the project’s positive impact on students, staff, and the wider community, ensuring inclusivity, wellbeing, and enhanced educational outcomes.

  • Open to any school, college, or higher education building in the UK and Ireland that has been open since at least 2015.
  • The project could be:

    • A repurposed building originally designed for another use but successfully adapted for education.

Judging Criteria

Submissions will be marked out of 10 for each of the following criteria:

  • Quality of Design (10 points)
    Evidence of exceptional architectural and educational design, showcasing innovation, creativity, and user-centred solutions. The design should reflect the unique cultural, environmental, and educational context of the project.
  • Functionality and Learning Impact (10 points)
    Demonstration of how the new building enhances the educational or research experience, providing practical, flexible, and inspiring spaces that support students, teachers, and researchers.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Satisfaction (10 points)
    Examples of collaboration with the school, college, or university leadership, staff, and students, ensuring the project meets user needs. A testimonial from a key institutional leader (such as a principal, dean, or research director) is encouraged.
  • Sustainability and Environmental Performance (10 points)
    Evidence of sustainable design and construction, considering local environmental challenges, climate factors, and energy efficiency measures. Include specific performance metrics where possible.

The Department for Education Sustainability Award celebrates the collective efforts of schools and colleges in creating a more sustainable future. This award recognises institutions that have taken innovative, measurable, and impactful steps to embed sustainability within their operations, curriculum, and community.

The winning school or college will receive a £2,500 award to further support sustainability initiatives.

Sustainability is not just about energy efficiency or carbon reduction—it is about creating an environmentally responsible culture that considers air quality, travel, biodiversity, and the physical and mental wellbeing of students and staff. Schools and colleges play a vital role in preparing young people for a sustainable future, and this award seeks to highlight those making meaningful progress.

Eligibility

  • Only state schools or colleges receiving funding through their local authority or directly from the government are eligible to enter.
  • Entries must be for an individual school or college (Multi-Academy Trusts will not be judged as a whole).

Entry Requirements

To enter, schools and colleges must submit:

  • 300 words describing the school or college and its approach to sustainability.
  • 50 words on why the school or college should win.
  • A pack of supporting information presented as either:
    • Two A3 posters or
    • Five presentation slides
      This should highlight initiatives, measures, and policies implemented to enhance sustainability, using both qualitative and quantitative data. Examples include:
      • Energy monitoring/measures implemented to save energy
      • Waste management/reduction in paper waste
      • Increase in biodiversity
      • Sustainable travel initiatives
      • Pupil engagement in climate action plans

Judging Criteria

Entries will be assessed on the following:

  • Pupil Engagement (10 Points)
    Evidence of how students have been actively involved in driving sustainability initiatives within the school or college.
  • Staff Engagement (10 Points)
    Demonstration of how staff members contribute to and support sustainable practices.
  • Community Engagement (10 Points)
    Examples of how the school or college has collaborated with the wider community to promote sustainability beyond the campus.
  • Engagement with any element of the DfE sustainability support programme (10 Points)
