Developing a SEND Sufficiency Strategy - The How to Guide
Nikola Idle, Sewell Advisory
The rising trend for pupils needing places at specialist provision is growing a pace, and showing no signs of stopping. Local Authorities are taking a variety of approaches to delivery of these place – with some being more reactive than others (driven by a desperate need) and others trying to adopt a more strategic approach.
This presentation will provide delegates with a whistlestop tour of what we believe a good strategic approach looks like, the component parts, hints for specific challenges, overlaid against the theory vs reality of how Rotherham Council used this approach to put their strategy into action.
The Value of Partnership in our Education Estate
Diane Brazier, Orchard Hill College & Paul Turpin, Arcadis
Local authorities (LA) have an obligation to provide pupil places, with the SEND Code of Practice stating every student up to the age of 25 has a right to an education. However, LAs may not always have the internal or specialist SEND knowledge to provide facilities required to meet need but may have the assets and associated capital. Successful partnership working with LA, SEND provider and a technical team is therefore key to the successful implementation of a high quality SEND estate for young people and for wider community use.
